Emergency Preparedness
A major disaster can have catastrophic consequences for any community. In the Canal, dense housing, limited entry and exit points, and a large population of residents who speak languages other than English make preparedness especially important.
Since 2019, MCM has worked to give residents the skills and resources they need, starting with a team of CERT certified block captains and expanding to regular workshops. Today, trained Community Ambassadors offer presentations and resources in Spanish and lead disaster preparedness outreach through LISTOS CA.
Community Ambassadors for Emergency Preparedness
Our Community Ambassadors for Emergency Preparedness lead bilingual outreach, sharing practical tips on everything from packing a go-bag to staying safe during extreme heat. They table at community events, host preparedness fairs, and give presentations at libraries and community centers. At every step, they bring emergency education directly to the people while reducing fear through knowledge and connection.
Their presentations cover topics like:
- Disaster planning for families and elders
- Mental health awareness
- Extreme weather safety
- County-wide emergency alerts
